Laura Orlando is the executive director of the Resource Institute for Low Entropy Systems (RILES) and an adjunct assistant professor of environmental health at the Boston University School of Public Health. She has over 30 years of international experience working on the design, construction, and management of sustainable systems in the built environment, with a special focus on community-led water and sanitation projects. Laura is currently a trustee and steering committee member of the EcoHealth Network, president of the board of the Higher Synthesis Foundation, and member of the editorial board of Rural America: In These Times. She has a BSE in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan and a MPA from Harvard Kennedy School.

Conservation, restoration, and participatory management of ecosystems (i.e., from the inside-out) are not only hands-on forms of “engagement with nature,” but also reciprocally restorative practices: restorative for the people involved as well as for the ecosystems undergoing restorative actions.
