Esperanza is a member and founder of Acción Ecológica, an Ecuadorian environmental organization, and co-founder of Oilwatch. She is also president of the Office for the Defense of Nature and its Rights. She holds a biologist degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, is a lawyer, and has an honorary doctorate from the Rovira i Vigili University.
